Crystal Palace boss hints he could quit job ahead of Community Shield clash with Liverpool

Oliver Glasner has warned that his future at Crystal Palace could be in doubt if the club fails to strengthen significantly in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

The Austrian coach, who guided Palace to FA Cup glory just three months ago, has entered the final year of his contract.

Yet instead of basking in the glow of that triumph, he has grown increasingly frustrated by what he describes as a 'passive' approach to recruitment.

Glasner has made no secret of his dissatisfaction, pointing to last summer’s sluggish business as a problem that was meant to be fixed after he and chairman Steve Parish held talks in the wake of their Wembley success.

But with fewer than three weeks until deadline day, the manager says the squad remains short of the numbers and quality needed to compete on multiple fronts.

Asked directly about the status of his own deal, Glasner was quick to shut down the topic.

“No, no negotiations,” he said. “At the moment it’s three weeks’ time to get the squad done, so Oliver Glasner’s contract is not important at the moment.”

Pressed further on whether Palace’s activity in the coming days would influence his desire to commit his future to the club, his answer was terse: “We will see.”

He even poked fun at the uncertainty, comparing his situation to that of captain Marc Guehi, who is prepared to see out his current deal and leave for free next summer.

“Marc and me will have the same fate,” he joked.

So far, the Eagles have made only two signings. Goalkeeper Walter Benitez has arrived to replace Matt Turner following his loan spell, while Borna Sosa has come in at left-back to fill the gap left by Ben Chilwell’s departure.

Glasner was pleased to welcome them, but he insists those additions alone will not be enough.

“We were quite passive,” he admitted. “We replaced Matt Turner with Walter Benitez and we replaced Ben Chilwell with Sosa. It’s good to have them in the building.

“But we have to add a few players to be ready for this competition.

"We are short of numbers and if we want to be competitive in all four competitions, we have to add players - and especially players with quality.

"This is what we have to do in the next three weeks because then the window closes. It looks like we have six games from Sunday to the end of August. That’s why we have to act.”

Palace’s FA Cup win has given them a platform to build on, but without decisive moves in the transfer market, they risk slipping backwards.

For Glasner, who has already turned down interest from other clubs in order to lead Palace into the new campaign, patience is wearing thin.

If the club can’t match his ambition in the next 21 days, the Eagles could be facing not only another uphill season - but also the possibility of losing the man who masterminded their greatest moment in decades.
