Sky Sports found itself scrambling for corrections after Soccer Saturday endured a comedy of errors during its coverage of Barnsley’s season opener against Plymouth Argyle.
With the EFL League One and Two seasons kicking off, all eyes were on Home Park — but the studio updates left more confusion than clarity.
Jamie Mackie, on duty as match analyst, was first thrown off just five minutes in, when it appeared Caleb Watts had given Plymouth the lead.
Host Julian Warren cut to Mackie for confirmation — only for it to emerge moments later that the goal had been chalked off for a foul.
Then came another moment of awkwardness. Plymouth’s Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu scored an own goal — but Warren, misreading the update, declared it a goal for Plymouth.
Mackie had to gently correct him: “It’s a Plymouth player that scored… but in the wrong net.”
As the graphics hastily adjusted and the scoreline was set right, Warren apologised with good humour, telling viewers: “Sorry for that brief burst of hope, Plymouth fans — you’re actually trailing.”

But the technical hiccups weren’t done yet.
When Adam Phillips made it 2-0 for Barnsley, the Sky vidiprinter bizarrely reverted the score back to 1-0 — prompting yet another correction of the correction.
Warren, keeping his cool throughout, joked: “I think the vidiprinter’s still on holiday — probably lounging somewhere with a couple of piña coladas.”

Fortunately for Sky, the second half went off without incident, and Barnsley wrapped up a 3-1 win — though the broadcasters might chalk up the first half as one to forget.
Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane, meanwhile, praised his side following their win.
"I think it was a mad game," he said. "So much happened - there was a red card, a disallowed goal from the start.
"I think we played some good stuff.
"I just think it was an open day, frantic bit of everything game.
"I'm just delighted to come out the other side of it."
He added: "I'm delighted to tick one off straight away.

"It's a long, long season so I'm not going to get too excited but my big thing from the group is the togetherness and the grit.
"We'd have lost that last year no question.
"We had a couple of situations last year where we may have been ahead and folded a little bit.
"But there just seems a bit of an edge to the group."
