England's cricketer Mark Wood is set to miss Thursday's day-night Ashes Test at the Gabba following the emergence of soreness in his left knee in Australia.
The 35-year-old was notably absent from Saturday morning's training session at Allan Border Field in Brisbane, becoming the sole player among the 13-strong England contingent in Queensland not to participate.
His latest setback arrives after he delivered just 11 overs during England's eight-wicket loss in Perth, where Australia secured victory within two days.
The Durham bowler had only recently returned to competitive cricket following a nine-month layoff caused by surgery on the same troublesome knee in March.
His participation in Perth marked his first Test appearance in 14 months and his initial competitive outing since February's Champions Trophy.
Despite clocking speeds of 94mph during the match, Wood failed to claim any wickets and experienced discomfort both during and after the contest.
His fitness concerns extend beyond the knee issue, with the paceman having undergone scans on his left hamstring following tightness experienced whilst bowling eight overs in England's sole warm-up fixture against the Lions at Lilac Hill.
Wood, who celebrates his 36th birthday two days after the series concludes on January 11, recently received only a one-year ECB central contract after previously holding a three-year agreement.

Josh Tongue stands as the most probable replacement should England maintain their five-seamer strategy, with the bowler currently representing England Lions against the Prime Minister's XI in Canberra alongside Matthew Potts and Jacob Bethell.
Alternative tactical considerations could see England introduce spin to their attack for the pink-ball encounter.
Will Jacks' superior all-round capabilities position him ahead of Shoaib Bashir for selection if England opt to reduce their pace contingent.
The Gabba's conditions may influence this decision, particularly given the unique challenges of day-night Test cricket and the potential benefits of varying their bowling options after Perth's rapid conclusion.

Wood's recovery efforts in Perth were notably disrupted when England's batting collapse forced him to abandon his ice machine treatment prematurely.
Speaking to the For The Love of Cricket podcast, Wood revealed: "I was using the ice machine in the backroom.
"All of a sudden we start losing wickets and I look down [at the machine] and there's still 17 minutes to go, then another one and it's 12 minutes left.
"I thought: 'I've got to get off this and get ready!'"

The nine-day interval before Adelaide's third Test on December 17 offers potential recovery time.
England has given no current indication that Wood's tour has concluded.
The side may opt to preserve him for Adelaide's traditionally flat surface, where his extreme pace could prove particularly valuable.
