England make Thomas Tuchel decision after semi-final heartbreak as FA chief admits 'we're all disappointed'

Thomas Tuchel still has the FA's backing despite last night's World Cup semi-final exit and will lead the Three Lions into Euro 2028, according to reports.

The German held his hands up after his defensive subs left England sitting deep and weathering an Argentine storm in the closing stages of the game.

And, 10 minutes from time, his side paid the price - with Enzo Fernandez burying a long-range equaliser before Lautaro Martinez dealt the final blow.

But Tuchel has the full backing of FA chief executive Mark Bullingham, who admitted he was disappointed at full-time.

"It is heartbreaking to be so close," he said.

"The players and Thomas gave it everything today and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament.

"I would like to thank them all - and also give my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful fans here in the USA and at home. We felt your support every step of the way and we are all so disappointed not to go further."

The Three Lions faithful had to watch on in horror as England sat deep in a 5-4-1 formation to see out their lead.

When Fernandez scored, England had six defenders on the pitch, four of whom were centre-backs.

After the eventual winner, one of those centre-backs, Ezri Konsa, was the one on the wing crossing into Dan Burn - while creative outlets Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze sat on the bench.

Asked if he believed he got his decisions wrong, the England boss said: "No, I believe that's just the nature of the game.

"As soon as you lose, you get criticised. That's just what it is and get criticised after. No one knows what would have happened if we made different decisions," Tuchel added.

"So, it makes no sense to engage in that and lose my head. I'm responsible for them, I took them, so I take the criticism. That's just the way it is."

Tuchel admits his side were too “passive” and “tired” in Atlanta - where England fell into the kind of negativity fans so hated under Sir Gareth Southgate.

Supporters and pundits alike drew direct parallels to the Euro 2020 final at Wembley, where England invited pressure for some 115 minutes before losing on penalties to Italy.

But he then appeared to lash out at armchair pundits at full-time.

"Millions of coaches after the game think that they know better," the German bristled.

"I have to make a decision, it’s how I analysed the game. No regrets. The team gave everything and played one of our better matches, probably our best under the circumstances."

Tuchel intends to lead England into their "home" Euros in two years' time despite the backlash to their loss in Georgia.

He signed a contract extension in February - but will face a four-year wait to fulfil his stated wish to add a "second star" above the Three Lions badge.
