England review security before Mexico clash after World Cup hotel chaos

England are reviewing security around their team hotel in Mexico City amid fears Mexico fans could attempt to disrupt Thomas Tuchel's squad before their huge World Cup last-16 showdown.

The Football Association is assessing arrangements ahead of the tie after Ecuador made an official complaint to FIFA over the treatment of their players before Tuesday's defeat in the capital.

Dozens of Mexico supporters reportedly gathered outside Ecuador's hotel in Santa Fe on Monday night before their last-32 clash, creating relentless noise into the early hours.

Fans are said to have used horns, loudspeakers and motorcycle engines in an apparent attempt to disturb the Ecuador squad's sleep before the match.

The tactic is not unusual in Latin American football, where hostile atmospheres can often begin long before kick-off.

But the incident has now put England on alert as they prepare to face one of the tournament co-hosts at the Azteca, reports The Guardian.

FA officials are believed to be confident that the current security operation around England's base is strong enough to protect the players and staff.

However, those plans are being kept under review and could still be altered if fresh intelligence emerges before the game.

England are braced for an intimidating occasion in Mexico City, with the majority of the 83,264-capacity stadium expected to be behind the hosts.

The FA have received an official allocation of just 3,000 tickets for travelling England supporters, meaning Tuchel's side will be heavily outnumbered inside one of world football's most iconic arenas.

More England fans are still expected to make it into the stadium through secondary ticket routes, but prices have already soared.

The most expensive ticket listed on resale markets on Thursday was priced at a staggering £27,300.

England's record at the World Cup

There will also be a significant police presence around Mexico City before the game.

Security has been heightened throughout this stage of the World Cup, with the country's leg of the tournament taking place against a backdrop of major demonstrations.

Protests have been held by direct action groups representing striking teachers, judges and families of Mexico's 130,000 missing people.

That has added another layer of complexity for organisers as England prepare for one of their most hostile assignments of the competition so far.

Ecuador's build-up to their defeat was already far from ideal even before the hotel disturbance.

Their flight from Columbus, Ohio, was delayed by three hours and they then encountered heavy traffic after arriving in Mexico City.

England reached the last-16 thanks to a double from Harry Kane against DR Congo

The disruption meant their journey took around nine hours in total before they were later kept awake by supporters outside the hotel.

England will be determined to avoid suffering similar problems as they continue preparations for a match that promises to test their composure as much as their quality.

Thomas Tuchel's men have won three of their four tournament games so far.

They beat DR Congo 2-1 last time out, with Harry Kane scoring a brilliant brace to fire them through.
