John Stones 'considered' for shock move by Premier League giants after Man City exit

Chelsea are weighing up a surprise move for former Manchester City defender John Stones after his departure from the Etihad, with the England international emerging as a genuine option for Xabi Alonso's side.

The experienced centre-back is available on a free transfer after leaving City at the end of his contract and is currently enjoying a well-earned break following England's run to the World Cup semi-finals.

While Chelsea previously attempted to dismiss speculation linking them with Stones, the Daily Mail say that the 32-year-old is now firmly under consideration as the Blues explore ways of strengthening their defence before the new Premier League campaign.

Stones would bring a wealth of experience to Stamford Bridge, having won every major domestic honour during his time at City while also becoming a key figure for England over the past decade.

Chelsea have previously shown the value of adding experienced leaders at the back, with Thiago Silva enjoying an outstanding spell in west London, and club chiefs believe Stones could provide similar leadership alongside the club's younger defenders.

However, Chelsea are not alone in monitoring the situation.

Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in the defender, with Mikel Arteta's side reportedly viewing him as a potential short-term solution should William Saliba face an extended spell on the sidelines.

Stones is one of several defensive targets being assessed by Chelsea as Alonso continues reshaping his squad.

The Blues remain in discussions over Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix, with negotiations progressing to ownership level after Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali and Palace chairman Steve Parish held talks during a meeting in New York.

Palace are said to value the France international at around £60million, while Como defender Jacobo Ramon is another player who has featured prominently on Chelsea's shortlist in recent months.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

John Stones recently played a key role for England at the World Cup

Chelsea's transfer activity has not been limited to defence.

The west London club also saw a £64million offer for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott rejected after the Cherries made it clear they have no intention of selling one of their prized assets this summer.

Scott recently turned down the latest contract proposal from Bournemouth, fuelling interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future, Bournemouth remain determined to retain the England Under-21 international and swiftly knocked back Chelsea's opening approach.

Chelsea are also standing firm over highly-rated academy graduate Josh Acheampong.

The 20-year-old defender has attracted repeated interest from other clubs, but Chelsea have consistently insisted he is not available for transfer despite several enquiries during the window.

Nevertheless, the youngster will be eager for regular first-team football after impressing whenever called upon.

With Chelsea absent from European competition this season, opportunities could be more limited, although those close to the defender believe he is ready to establish himself at senior level.

Preparations for Alonso's first full campaign are set to step up later this week when Chelsea fly to Sydney to begin their pre-season tour of Australia.

The club are still awaiting the return of several players who featured at the World Cup, with those involved entitled to a three-week break before reporting back.
