Football star falls down huge tunnel celebrating goal before VAR delivers brutal twist

A Brazilian footballer suffered a terrifying fall down an open stadium tunnel while celebrating a goal - only for his effort to then be disallowed by VAR.

Coritiba defender Jacy was involved in the extraordinary incident during his side's 2-1 victory over Chapecoense in Brazil's top flight on Saturday.

The 29-year-old believed he had doubled Coritiba's advantage during the first half and immediately raced away to celebrate what he thought was his team's second goal.

But his celebrations took a frightening turn after he jumped over the advertising hoardings surrounding the pitch.

Unbeknownst to Jacy, the entrance to a tunnel leading towards the dressing rooms had been opened ahead of the approaching half-time interval.

The defender consequently disappeared from view as he plunged into the uncovered entrance.

Footage of the alarming incident showed a security guard immediately racing down the nearby stairs to check on Jacy, while several of his concerned Coritiba team-mates gathered around the opening and peered down into the tunnel.

Jacy was eventually able to emerge and received attention from members of Coritiba's medical team following the fall.

And there was another cruel twist waiting for the defender.

After initially believing he had scored, a VAR review determined that the goal should be ruled out for offside, meaning Jacy's painful celebration had ultimately been for nothing.

Despite the dramatic fall, the Brazilian was initially able to continue playing and completed the remainder of the first half.

However, Jacy was unable to stay on the pitch for much longer after the interval.

The defender was substituted just two minutes into the second half after continuing to experience the effects of his tumble.

Remarkably, Saturday's bizarre episode was not the first time a Coritiba player has fallen into the same tunnel at the Couto Pereira stadium while celebrating a goal.

Former Coritiba striker Joel was involved in an eerily similar incident back in 2014.

Joel scored twice during a match against Sao Paulo but disappeared down the open tunnel while celebrating one of his goals after also going beyond the advertising boards.

In an extraordinary coincidence, the same security guard who rushed to Jacy's aid on Saturday had also been present to help Joel following his fall more than a decade earlier.

Coritiba were at least able to finish Saturday's match with something to celebrate.

Despite Jacy's effort being chalked off, they secured a 2-1 victory over Chapecoense to collect all three points.

However, the match was also overshadowed by a far more serious medical incident involving Chapecoense midfielder Max Alves.

Alves required hospital treatment after colliding with one of his own team-mates during the game.

He was subsequently taken into intensive care after suffering multiple rib fractures, while he also underwent surgery to have a chest drain inserted following the collision.
