Rory McIlroy hails his team after fantastic opening round in BMW Championship

Rory McIlroy has hailed his team after a fantastic opening round in the BMW Championship in St Louis.

The Northern Irishman struggled last week, failing to break 70 in his four rounds of golf and finishing 66th.

The Masters champion shot a brilliant six-under-par 64 at Bellerive Country Club yesterday to take a joint share of the lead.

McIlroy praised his team around him, saying that a bit of "good work" with them has helped him find his form again.

"I felt at least like I got myself back going in the right direction and what I wanted to do with my swing, but still you never know when you turn up here," McIlroy told the Golf Channel.

"This golf course sets up a lot better for me than Memphis did last week.

"You can miss it a little bit off the tee, and the playing corridors are a lot wider, so you can get away with it, which I needed to get away with it a couple of times today.

"But this set-up suits my game a little bit better, and I definitely feel a little bit more comfortable on this golf course than I did last week."

The Northern Irishman took a cautious approach when thinking about the second round as he gets ready to tee off with America's Xander Schauffele.

McIlroy told reporters: "It's certainly a work in progress.

"Days like this are encouraging, obviously, but there's still a lot of work to be done.

"For the first round with what I'm trying to do, it went as well as it could have today."

World No1 Scottie Scheffler, who cruised to victory last week in the St Jude Championship, struggled to find his groove, opening with a two-over-par 72.

The American finished one shot above the worst score of the opening round and joint 44th in the 50-man field.

Scheffler had shot over par just once in his last 18 rounds as he struggled with his approach play and putting.

The American tees off with England's Matt Fitzpatrick later today, going off after Chris Gotterup and Tommy Fleetwood.

Fitzpatrick produced a solid round of five-under-par yesterday to sit him just one back from the lead, while his brother, Alex, shot a four-under-par 66.
