Erling Haaland has been tipped to smash through the 1,000-goal barrier and establish himself as the greatest goalscorer football has ever seen.
Jamie Carragher made the remarkable prediction after the Manchester City striker delivered yet another ruthless Champions League display, scoring twice in his side’s 2-0 victory away to Porto.
The brace carried Haaland to 167 goals in only 203 appearances since joining City from Borussia Dortmund, moving him into third place on the club’s all-time scoring chart.
His record in Europe’s elite competition is even more extraordinary.
The Norway international has now struck 59 goals across just 59 Champions League appearances, maintaining an average of exactly one per game.
Haaland has amassed 366 goals in 445 matches for club and country despite being only 26, numbers which persuaded Carragher that even Cristiano Ronaldo’s historic total could eventually be surpassed.
The former Liverpool defender believes the frequency of Haaland’s goals has made his spectacular achievements seem almost routine.
Speaking on CBS Sports following City’s victory, Carragher said: “I just can’t see Haaland not scoring 1,000 goals or being the best goalscorer of all time.
“I have never seen anything like it in terms of goals and numbers and it is every game.
“But because he does it so often, it does not feel that big.
“He has just scored two goals away from home in the Champions League and any other striker does that it is an amazing night.
“It just feels like a normal night.

“I just can’t see how he does not end up being the greatest goalscorer or getting the most goals we have ever seen anybody get.”
Haaland would require another 634 goals to reach the four-figure mark, meaning he must sustain his relentless scoring rate deep into his thirties.
If he were to continue playing for another decade, the City talisman would need to average just over 63 goals per season across all competitions.
That would represent an enormous challenge even for a player with his astonishing numbers, but Haaland has repeatedly demolished scoring records since arriving in English football.
Ronaldo remains the leading goalscorer in the history of the men’s game, having registered 978 goals during a remarkable career which has stretched beyond his 40th birthday.
The Portuguese superstar is followed by Lionel Messi, who has found the net 927 times for club and country.
Brazil icon Pele is officially credited with 762 competitive goals, although Guinness World Records recognises a total of 1,281 when unofficial and exhibition matches are included.
Haaland still has an immense distance to travel before threatening those figures.
Yet his age, fitness and extraordinary consistency mean the possibility can no longer be dismissed.
City will now turn their attentions towards Sunday's showdown with Manchester United at Old Trafford, with that match due to take place at 4.30pm.
