Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso delivered a brutal assessment of his players after their alarming 3-0 Premier League defeat by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Blues had enjoyed promising spells during the opening stages of the west London derby but unravelled after the interval, with Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho sealing a memorable victory for the hosts.
It was Chelsea’s second league defeat of the season and a performance that left Alonso furious with his side’s failure to compete until the final whistle.
The 44-year-old refused to blame the absence of injured captain Reece James or influential forward Joao Pedro, instead demanding an immediate response from his underperforming squad.
Alonso believes Chelsea paid the price for allowing their intensity and concentration levels to drop during a disastrous second-half display.
"I'm disappointed at the end with the second half and the result," the Chelsea head coach said.
"This is not enough to compete in the Premier League, not to be able to go for the 90 minutes. This is why today we were punished.
"It's not about talking or looking for excuses. We need to look at each other and know we have to work and improve.
"There is still a long way to go, but we have to check many things."
Chelsea’s miserable afternoon was particularly painful for summer signing Jordan Henderson, who endured a nightmare competitive debut against his former club.
The 36-year-old started at the base of Alonso’s midfield after recovering from a wrist injury but struggled to impose himself on proceedings.
Henderson was repeatedly targeted by the Brentford supporters and his costly mistake contributed to the hosts’ second goal.

The veteran midfielder surrendered possession during the build-up, enabling Mikkel Damsgaard to release Kevin Schade.
Although Schade’s initial attempt was stopped, Thiago reacted quickest to convert the rebound and tighten Brentford’s grip on the contest.
Any hopes of a late Chelsea comeback were extinguished when Carvalho added the third, completing the Blues’ second-half collapse and sparking celebrations around the Gtech Community Stadium.
Alonso must now find a way to restore stability before Chelsea enter a crucial sequence of Premier League fixtures, with Bournemouth lying in wait on October 10 after the international break.
Meanwhile, Brentford boss Keith Andews hailed Carvalho for his heroics following his goal off the bench.
The former Liverpool star has bagged two in two since returning from a serious ACL injury.
Andrews said: "The worst part of being a footballer is when you're injured and he's been unbelievable in his approach to it, in his professionalism, and he's comeback really seamlessly into the fold.
"He looks really sharp, really strong. To get that important goal tonight was nice for him and really special."
