Arsenal suffer more misery involving three players after Fleetwood Carabao Cup defeat

Arsenal's Carabao Cup disappointment has been compounded by concerns over Declan Rice, Noni Madueke and Riccardo Calafiori after Mikel Arteta confirmed all three players are carrying injuries.

The trio missed the Gunners' fourth-round trip to Fleetwood Town, where the Premier League champions were knocked out on penalties.

Calafiori's availability had already been uncertain after he struggled towards the end of Saturday's 2-0 victory over Everton.

Rice and Madueke were also absent, leaving Arsenal with fitness questions ahead of Sunday's visit to Liverpool.

Arteta revealed that Madueke has an ankle problem, while Rice had required a substitution against Everton because of an issue sustained during that match.

"Calafiori was out, Noni was out with an ankle [issue]," said the Spaniard.

"And Declan finished with a problem [against Everton] the other day. That's why I had to substitute him."

The Arsenal manager did not specify the nature of Rice's problem or provide a return date for any of the three players in those comments.

Their availability will be a concern as Arsenal prepare for Anfield, with the cup defeat adding to a difficult build-up to the Premier League fixture.

Despite the absences, Arteta was able to select a side featuring Jurrien Timber, Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres against their League Two opponents.

However, Arsenal failed to turn their chances into a decisive advantage and were held to a 1-1 draw before Fleetwood prevailed in the shootout.

Goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimaraes' penalty, while the hosts converted all five of their efforts.

Arsenal's frustrations had already increased when Max Dowman was sent off for violent conduct after kicking out at Harrison Neal following a strong challenge.

The 16-year-old's dismissal came towards the end of a contest in which the Gunners repeatedly failed to make their opportunities count.

Arteta's side put 19 shots off target, with Havertz missing several promising chances as Fleetwood kept themselves in contention.

But the Spaniard declined to question his players' commitment afterwards, insisting the result reflected their failure to capitalise on possession and openings rather than any lack of effort.

"First of all, congratulations to Fleetwood for going through in the next round, in the manner they've done it, the atmosphere they have created, and, yeah, a really sad day for us," he said.

"I cannot fault at all the attitude of the players. I haven't seen anyone not doing what is required at this level.

"But, obviously, we insisted so much, we have so much of the ball, so many chances, so many shots.

"And if you want the margins to be bigger than going to penalties, obviously, you need to capitalise on that.

"And we didn't. And football is about that."
