Jack Grealish faces Everton fine as reason for missing Newcastle clash emerges

Jack Grealish faces an Everton fine after missing training sparked a disciplinary row and saw him dropped for the club's Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle.

The Manchester City loanee was absent as David Moyes' side secured a 3-1 win to reach the quarter-finals.

He had missed Saturday's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Arsenal through illness, with hopes he could return for Thursday's cup tie.

Everton will now face League Two side Fleetwood Town for a place in the semi-finals.

But Grealish's absence from Monday's training session has left him facing a punishment, with the incident understood to have angered Moyes and club figures.

According to The Telegraph, the 31-year-old failed to report to Everton's Finch Farm training base when the squad were expected to attend, prompting the decision to leave him out against Newcastle.

Moyes and chief executive Angus Kinnear backed his exclusion, while Grealish is understood not to have attended the match at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton made the disciplinary nature of his absence public on social media 75 minutes before kick-off, an unusual step involving a player who has become popular with supporters.

The size of the fine remains unclear, with no confirmation over whether it could exceed two weeks' wages.

Grealish earns more than £170,000 a week, but the episode also raises questions over his standing with a manager who has supported him.

Jack Grealish has struggled for Everton this season

Moyes offered little explanation when questioned after the Newcastle victory.

"You probably know I am not going to give any details [about what happened]. It is a club decision and I support it," he said.

Asked whether he felt let down, he added: "It is something I don't want to speak about too much."

The setback comes during a frustrating campaign for Grealish, who has made eight appearances without scoring or registering an assist.

Moyes has sought to help the winger rediscover the form that persuaded Manchester City to pay Aston Villa £100million for him in 2021.

Grealish joined Everton on loan in August 2025 and has enjoyed backing from fans during his time on Merseyside.

Everton were impressive as they ran riot against Newcastle

His generosity was highlighted this week when he donated £10,000 to a fundraising appeal for Everton supporter Leon Skapars.

The 36-year-old father of three, who is fighting stage three cancer, was overwhelmed by the contribution to his GoFundMe page.

On the pitch, Everton responded to the disruption by securing their place in the last eight, with Moyes praising his squad's attitude afterwards.

"The one thing about Everton is that they have got real good values," he stated.

"All the players stand behind it and accept the values, on the pitch and off the pitch and I think the players did a good job.

"It is a small squad but we are doing our best to keep challenging. We are not accepting any excuses for nothing and I think the players are doing a great job, there was a humility about us [tonight], we have to play Newcastle again on Monday."
