Michael Carrick has fired back at Bruno Fernandes after the Manchester United captain questioned his manager's tactics following a humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como on Wednesday night.
United's run now stretches to seven matches without a victory across all competitions.
They are languishing in 13th place in the Premier League and have not won a game since beating Ipswich 5-2 in August.
An injury list has compounded their problems, with nine first-team players unavailable for the trip to Italy.
But it was the exchange between captain and head coach that provided the illustration of United's troubles after another damaging evening.
Fernandes suggested the visitors had handed Como the initiative by standing off their opponents, identifying the decision against pressing man-to-man as an instruction from the coaching staff.
Carrick, however, offered a blunt response when those remarks were put to him afterwards.
"We actually half pressed man-to-man in the second half and conceded from that," he said.

"If you don't run, don't run forward and you don't run back you are not going to win."
The comments followed an uncomfortable moment on the touchline, where Carrick did not acknowledge Fernandes as the midfielder came off with United already trailing 3-0.
Joshua Zirkzee replaced the Portuguese international and later supplied a consolation, but there was little else for the visitors to salvage at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium.
Nico Paz scored twice for Como, whose victory inflicted further misery on a United side struggling to halt their slide.

Fernandes had delivered his damning assessment of the performance, highlighting problems both in possession and when attempting to win the ball back.
"It's not the first time, we started on the wrong foot, and they scored very early," he said.
"Not much pressure on the ball, not many good movements with the ball, not many things going our way.
"Conceding early makes us go into game with a mood of defeat, it's difficult to get out of that, trying to be brave, to have the ball and make something happen.
"If we are not able to do that, it is going to be very difficult to get out of this situation.
"It's a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence."
Asked whether Carrick had got his tactics wrong, Fernandes added: "That's on the manager and staff to see, not me.
"Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable.

"As you saw with them [Como], the centre-back was coming to mark me in my own half.
"We need to do that as a team but we were unable to."
United now face Bournemouth at Old Trafford this weekend, with Carrick under increasing pressure to deliver a response.
Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have reportedly been lined up as potential successors.
