West Ham close to appointing club legend after sacking Nuno Espirito Santo

West Ham are understood to be close to appointing club legend Scott Parker after the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo.

The 52-year-old Portuguese, who led the Hammers to relegation from the Premier League last term, has been fired after the east London club slumped to eighth in the Championship.

Consecutive home losses, with a 3-2 defeat to Southampton followed by Saturday's 3-1 loss to West Brom, saw West Ham tumble from second place in the table.

The club said: "Following a thorough review of the start to the EFL Championship season, the board of directors believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the club's objectives and expectations remain on track."

Parker, who spent four seasons as a player at the London club, brings proven Championship pedigree, having guided both Bournemouth and Burnley to promotion from the second tier.

It is understood an appointment could be finalised ahead of Wednesday evening's trip to Cardiff City.

In the meantime, club legend Mark Noble is overseeing first-team affairs alongside Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville.

Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa have also departed alongside Nuno.

The club added: "West Ham United would like to thank Nuno, Rui and Rui for their hard work and commitment during their time at the club, and wish them all the very best for the future."

West Ham are now seeking their fourth permanent appointment since David Moyes departed in May 2024.

Julen Lopetegui, who replaced Moyes, lasted just half a season before being dismissed, with West Ham languishing in mid-table after just six victories from 20 top-flight matches.

Former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter was then brought in and steered the club to a 14th-place finish, but he too was sacked after roughly eight months when the Hammers found themselves 19th in the Premier League.

Nuno Espirito Santo

The board chose to retain Nuno despite failing to reverse the decline, but West Ham went down on the final day, finishing just two points adrift of Tottenham.

Their current campaign began in similarly troubled fashion, with the Hammers failing to win a game from their opening three fixtures and sitting 19th in the table.

A strong run of form in the first half of September, during which they netted 16 goals, highlighted by a 6-0 demolition of Wrexham, briefly propelled them to the top of the Championship.

That momentum proved short-lived, however.

Since that purple patch, West Ham have managed just two more league wins, with a 6-0 thrashing of nine-man Lincoln City and a narrow 1-0 win at Swansea City, following draws to Millwall and QPR.

The Hammers now trail leaders Middlesbrough by six points, a gap that prompted the board to act despite the club being widely regarded as promotion favourites.
